Jake and Chad stop in Troy, Missouri to ride horses bareback for the first time.

Jake can’t jump on, Chad falls off and “horse surfing” is a real thing. Riding a bareback horse is not easy! [How did we make this happen?]

HOW DID WE MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

Scenario: Looking for a challenge in the Midwest portion of our trip from Chicago to Los Angeles

1) Google searched “Missouri Adventures” and related keywords
2) Put out a feeler to friends and coworkers on Facebook asking about information on things to try in Missouri
3) Discovered that a coworker’s hometown was just outside St. Louis (Erik Cooper)
4) Contacted Erik and discussed what we could try that was new to us. Erik said that his family would be willing to teach us how to ride horses bareback on their land.
5) Once we found out his family was willing to help us, we stayed in constant contact with Erik and his family in order to determine a good day to visit
6) We followed up constantly and followed through with our timing and commitments
7) Once there, we proactively attempted to help Erik’s family out in any way possible to show our appreciation for their hospitality (including washing dishes, cleaning up, etc.)

HOW MIGHT YOU DO IT?

1) Try googling “ride a horse bareback in [YOUR CITY or STATE]”
2) Chances are, there won’t be any stables advertising bareback horse riding. However, if you call the stable, you can ask if its possible. We found there may be an extra fee.
3) The next best thing to do is throw a feeler out to family, friends, the Stampabout Community, and social networks to see if somebody knows somebody (who knows somebody) that might be willing to have you for a day to ride their personal horses bareback.
4) Set up a time and place with whomever is willing to help!
5) If no payment was involved ALWAYS make sure to show your appreciation in some way or promise to pay the favor forward.

Jake is the younger, yet taller and more dashing brother between “Jake and Chad.” He’s the voice of reason behind every one of Chad’s audacious ideas, as he puts the “calculated” in “calculated risk.” He also writes songs and makes videos for the joy of the Internet. Jake is currently redeeming the millions of airline points he’s racked up through mad travel hacking techniques and is probably on a plane somewhere.
